Winona and Johnny Depp met at the premiere of Great Balls of Fire! in 1989, when she was 17 and he was 26. They were engaged for three years before breaking up in 1993. Johnny had his ‘Winona Forever’ tattoo changed to ‘Wino Forever’.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Winona shared how the breakup and intense media coverage affected her. “That Was My” Girl, interrupted real life,” she said, referring to her 1999 film about a girl in a mental asylum. She added: “I remember playing this character who ends up being tortured in a Chilean prison (in the 1994 film The House of the Spirits). I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face (during the shoot), and I’d struggle to see myself as this little girl “Would you treat this girl the way you treat yourself?” I remember looking at myself and saying, “I’m doing this to myself inside.” Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”

Winona added that Michelle Pfeiffer, her 1993 film The Age of Innocence, was one of those who noticed. “I remember Michelle saying, ‘This will pass.’ But I couldn’t hear it I never talked about it There’s a part of me that’s very private I’ve got such a, like, a place in my heart for those days But for someone who’s younger and is growing up with social media, it’s hard to describe,” she said, crediting an “incredible therapist” to help her get out of that rut.

Winona first gained fame with her performance in the 1989 film Beetlejuice and went on to appear in several critically acclaimed films such as The Age of Innocence, Little Women and Girl, Interrupted. Her career took off in the 2000s and she took a break from movies and returned with Star Trek in 2009. Since 2016, she has starred in the huge hit Netflix Weird stuff
