Urmila took part in the Indian National Congress in March 2019 and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After losing the election, later in the same year, Urmila resigned from Congress citing “internal politics”. She joined Shiv Sena in December 2020.
About the judgments that had been spoken of her, Urmila told Pinkvilla that all “mess was loose.” She added: “Because suddenly there was this actress… if you’re an actor, if you’ve got a pretty decent face, if you’re known as this glamorous one, you know a sex symbol, whatever the tags you want to call it.” , you give it all on a scale for them, right? And of course a woman, if it was an actor, maybe he wouldn’t have been… So obviously, it’s a given that you have to be stupid, no have an idea, and yes ‘what the hell is she doing?’ They still think that, trust me.”
Urmila told how the media covered her campaign during the election, adding: “So that was a joke in itself for them, not so much for me because it was interesting. Even today I face it, even now, and I will continue to face it like many other women, not just me. I face it more because I’m an actor I guess. And I really want to change something.”
The actor has further credited her husband Mohsin Akhtar because she supported her political career, which was unexpected for her. Urmila will appear as a judge on Zee TV’s reality show, Dance India Dance Super Moms.
