In his long career, Tom Cruise has repeated very few on-screen characters, given its distaste for sequels. Aside from Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible series, Pete Mitchell in the two Top Gun movies, and Jack Reacher, there isn’t a character Tom has replayed. But that is now changing. According to reports, Tom is in talks with Mission Impossible 7 director Christopher McQuarrie to make a film for Les Grossman, the foul-mouthed studio manager he played in the 2008 film Tropic Thunder. According to a new report in Deadline, Tom and Christopher – which the actor will be directing for the foreseeable future Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning part 1–are in talks for three different movies. The report says one movie is a musical, one a potential franchise-starting action movie, and one will see the return of Les Grossman. Deadline says the two are “fixed on Les Grossman,” but won’t specify whether the character will star in his own movie or play a supporting role in a spin-off.
Les Grossman was a surprising cameo that Tom did in the Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jrstar comedy Tropic Thunder. The character was an overweight, profane and dance-loving studio manager who produced the title film in the film. The film received critical acclaim and RDJ even won an Oscar nomination for its performance. But Tom’s cameo also won hearts with many fans campaigning for a spin-off with him. Looks like it’s finally going to happen.
Earlier this year, Tom had hinted that he would be in favor of replaying the character. Speaking of a character he’d love to play again, he told ComicBook.com, “I did Les Grossman for the MTV Awards and we’ll have to see. That can be fun. But right now I really don’t know.”
Tom was last seen in Top Gun Maverick, which has become his highest-grossing film ever. With worldwide earnings of $1.3 billion, it is also the highest-grossing film of the year. The actor will next star in the two-part Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, which will be released in 2023 and 2024.
