Sonali made her Bollywood debut in the 1994 film Aag when she was only 19 years old. Before launching her first movie, she had already appeared in several TV commercials and advertisements. Some of her best works in the 90’s were Sarfarosh, Diljale and Major Saab. She recently made her OTT debut with The Broken News.
While promoting her comeback project, Sonali starred in the podcast The Ranveer Show and revealed that her roles were denied due to pressure from the underworld. She said: “A lot of clean sources funded movies. But there was no real, formal standing in the industry. So a lot of unregulated funding came in too, and banks won’t give it to you. So there was that limit.”
Sonali said she tried to stay away from “untrustworthy” movie producers and it was her then boyfriend, now husband, Goldie, who helped her understand this. However, the actor lost many roles due to the pressure from the underworld in the industry. “There were times when I had to play a part and it went to someone else because someone called them. But then the director or the co-actor will call you and say, ‘I’m under that pressure and I can’t help it.’ And “I understand,” she said.
Sonali’s latest project The Broken News was released on Zee5 on June 10. It also starred Jaideep Ahlawat and Shriya Pilgaonkar among others. It is directed by Vinay Waikul.
