In a newly released behind-the-scenes video from Shamshera, Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt discussed how hard it was for them to fight each other in action scenes, as they share a very different equation in real life. Director Karan Malhotra also shared that the duo used to worry about the fight scenes.
Karan Malhotra described Sanjay’s Shuddh Singh in shamshera as the ‘giant of negativity’ and Ranbir’s Balli as the ‘little, crazy, monstrous glimmer of hope’. The filmmaker said that Sanjay used to be “more careful” when dealing with Ranbir in action scenes, because he treats the actor like his son. Karan said, “He would keep saying, ‘beta ye karunga to isko lag na jaaye (he might get hurt if I do this)'” Karan added that even Ranbir used to be worried about the action scenes, telling him “Wo Sanjay Dutt hain yaar, kaise karunga mai (He’s Sanjay Dutt, how shall I do this?)’.” A BTS clip showed Ranbir asking Sanjay if he was okay after they shot a scene together.
Sanjay admitted that he was confronted with this hesitation, explaining, “I was in a relationship with Ranbir when he was a very small child and he was growing up. Even if I wanted to fight with him, I was very concerned.” Ranbir shared that despite Sanjay’s concerns, this is the most beating he has received in his life. He said: “I grew up at the ages of 9 and 10 with a Sanjay Dutt poster in my closet, then I got the chance to play him in a biopic, and finally for him to be the ruthless threat – Shuddh Singh What he was in front of the camera was so brutal, I’ve never been hit so hard in my life.”
The actor added: “It’s amazing that he’s my opponent! He’s hitting me and I have to hit him on screen. Because that’s not how I feel about him. I see Sanjay Dutt, the kind of personality and charisma he has , you just want to hug him and talk to him.”
Shamshera is set in the fictional town of Kaza in the 1800s and also stars in Vaani Kapoor. Aditya Chopra’s production also features Ashutosh Rana, Saurabh Shukla, Ronit Roy, Tridha Choudhury, and Pitobash Tripathy. It is scheduled for theatrical release on July 22 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
