Akshay Kumar’s latest release Raksha Bandhan was low at the box office, falling even lower on Tuesday. The film has gathered around 36.12 crore despite releasing at the festival of Raksha Bandhan and having a five day extended weekend. It clashed with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha in theaters, which only slightly outperformed Akshay’s film. Raksha Bandhan plays Akshay as Lala Kedarnath, who had promised his dying mother not to get married until after he married off his four sisters. It deals with the issue of dowry in India. The film stars Bhumi Pednekar as Akshay’s love interest and is directed by Aanand L Rai, who directed Akshay in Atrange Re.
According to a report on boxofficeindia.com, Raksha Bandhan decreased by almost 80% from the opening day collection of 8.20 crore to make alone 1.65 crore on Tuesday. Film critic Taran Adarsh called it a “non-performer.” He shared the roundup from the five-day weekend and had tweeted on Tuesday: “Raksha Bandhan is a non-performer…fails to hit double digits despite multiple vacations…five day total is a complete shock…Thursday 8.20 crores [Raksha Bandhan]Friday 6.40 crore, Saturday 6.51 crore, Sunday 7.05 crore, Monday 6.31 crores [Independence Day]. Total: 34.47 crores. India biz (business).”
The film’s six-day collections are much lower than Akshay’s latest release, Samrat Prithviraj. The period drama had collected 55 crore in the first week. The film was released on June 3.
During Raksha Bandhan’s promotions, Akshay had talked about the wickedness of the dowry in India. He had called the movie a “sensitive” movie and said that not many movies were made about it. “If the movie even works with 5-10 percent of the people who watch it, I feel like I’ve made the greatest movie ever,” he said in an interview with PTI.
