Puneet Issar is a household name. After playing the role of Duryodhan in BR Chopra’s television show Mahabharat, he went on to do various shows and movies. But the actor admits that getting good offers was not easy as he got stuck in the same rut of roles.

“My first film was Coolie (1983) where the unfortunate incident took place (he had accidentally seriously injured actor Amitabh Bachchan) and after that I was labeled an action man because of my personality, although I preferred emotionally intense characters. Fortunately, I got to play the character of Duryodhan and prove that I am an actor of stature and substance,” he says.

Issar admits it wasn’t easy to get good offers as he got stuck in the same rut again despite a hit under his belt. He says: “The role became so popular and when people thought of a negative character, they thought of me. I was only offered negative roles no matter what I did.”

However, Issar, last seen in the movie Jayeshbhai Jordaar, believes that OTT has been a game-changer. “People have become more accepting of new thoughts. People used to watch [and create] conventional things with the fear that the project could flop. With the arrival of OTT, work is underway,” says the actor, who also wants to explore the web space. “It’s not about chasing OTT. Agar OTT my substantial role milega, where I can show my versatility, kyun nahin karenge? With the arrival of new writers and directors, entertainment gets better every day,” he adds.

Not wanting to stick to one type of roles, Issar says he likes to reinvent himself and play roles and continue to surprise his audience. He is pleased that OTT gives many actors a variety of roles and opportunities. “It’s not a matter of chasing OTT. An actor is an actor. Agar OTT mein substantial role milega, where I can show my versatility than kyun nahin kaarenge. With the arrival of new writers and directors, entertainment gets better and better every day because they do a great job.”

He says people want to act in any new medium, but that doesn’t mean the other mediums will stop or stop. He adds: “For an actor, whatever good role comes your way, you just pick it up. First we made movies, then television came with only Doordarshan and soon private channels started as well. Now the digital platform has a revolutionized entertainment.”
