Natalie Portman has not been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over eight years; and it has started to show. Today’s MCU is very different from the one it left after Thor: The Dark World, with more emphasis on secrecy. Actors in Marvel movies are instructed and trained to avoid spoilers. However, Natalie accidentally let one slip during the recent global press conference for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. Hindustan Times attended the global press conference for the sequel to Thor, where main stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Christian Bale joined Natalie. Also in attendance were director Taika Waititi and producer Kevin Feige. In Thor: Love and ThunderNatalie reprises her role as Dr. Jane Foster, but with a twist. Her character now wields Thor’s famous hammer Mjolnir and also possesses all of his powers.
While discussing this new dimension of her role, Natalie was asked how her version of Thor is different from Chris’. She replied, “No, completely different. But I think he’s obviously very confident and experienced in being a superhero, and she’s just trying to find out.”
While working out this answer, Natalie let a major spoiler slip. She added: “She’s new to it. And keeps returning to human form too, so there’s always some sort of danger that it could be her last moment to experience that.” While saying this, the actor checked herself and added, “I don’t know that that could be … that could be a major spoiler, sorry.”
On its own, Natalie’s comment may sound harmless, but a look at the origins of her character’s comic book tells a lot about why she felt it was a spoiler. In the comics, Jane Foster turns into Mighty Thor after wielding the Mjolnir and even joins the Avengers. However, this all happens after she is diagnosed with cancer. In the Original Sin storyline of Marvel Comics, Thor loses his powers and Jane picks up his hammer and gains Thor’s powers. This transformation also cures her of her cancer and even rids her body of the chemotherapy used in her treatment, restoring her health and strength.
Referring to what Jane’s “last moment” could be to experience Thor’s power, Natalie suggests in the film that the character may also be suffering from cancer or another illness. So far, the teaser and trailer have only shown Jane in her transformed appearance as Mighty Thor and not in her normal form. This could be because her real form has been weakened by a disease and the creators want to hide that before release.
This also matches what was in the description of a merch associated with the film. A series of character replicas from the film went on sale last month. According to The Direct, the description of the Mighty Thor’s helmet reveals that Jane got her powers from Mjolnir’s broken pieces when she visited New Asgard, the sanctuary of Asgardians on Earth. The description reads: “Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever. Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the thunder god’s hammer, transformed her into the Mighty One. Thor and bestowed upon her the superpowers of Thor, however, Marvel movie merchandise has often been misleading, using storylines from comics rather than movies.
Fans have been speculating on forums for months that the Mighty Thor storyline in Thor: Love and Thunder will be similar to the comics, but the creators or stars have not responded. However, Natalie’s reaction and checking the ‘big spoiler’ does indicate that this could be the case. Unless, of course, this is all a major deception by Marvel, which is what the studio has done in the past. Also read: Thor merch reveals how Jane Foster turns Natalie Portman into a superhero
Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth solo Thor movie in the MCU, each starring Chris Hemsworth in the lead. Natalie returns to the franchise and has missed every movie since the second Thor came out in 2013. In the movies, her character Jane and Thor broke up years ago, and they will now reunite. Together, they must face a new threat: Gorr, the God Butcher, a new villain played by Christian Bale. The Taika Waititi movie will be released in India on July 7.
