Mona Singh has responded to criticism surrounding her casting as the mother of Aamir Khan’s character in their new film Laal Singh Chaddha. Mona, 40, plays the mother of 57-year-old Aamir in a move that has been criticized by many. Laal Singh Chaddha is the official adaptation of Tom Hanks starrer Forrest Gump. While Aamir has taken on the role of Tom, Mona reprises the role of Sally Field. Read also| Aamir Khan asks for ‘logic’ behind criticism of Mona Singh playing his mother
After the film’s trailer was released, many commented that it was inappropriate to cast Mona in that role. Many pointed out that Sally Field was 48 when she played the mother of 38-year-old Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump, a much more acceptable age difference. A day after the film’s release, Mona responded that she’s playing Laal Singh Chaddha’s mother, isn’t it Aamir Khan.
She told India Today: “There was a lot going on. I didn’t want to talk about it before because I wanted people to see the film. And I’m an actor. I’m not playing Aamir Khan’s mother, I’m playing Laal’s mother As Laal gets older, I get older in the film.”
The actor added: “It’s not an Aamir Khan biopic where he’s 57 and I’m 40 playing a mom. That would be wrong. Honestly, it didn’t even occur to me once that I might be doing the wrong thing. So confident and certainly most people wouldn’t question the age difference once they’d seen the movie.”
Laal Singh Chaddha marks the reunion of Mona, Aamir and Kareena Kapoor after their 2009 film 3 Idiots. Mona and Kareena played sisters in the film and Aamir played Kareena’s boyfriend, who gives birth to Mona’s baby in a pivotal scene of the film.
Laal Singh Chaddha opened in theaters on August 11 to mixed reviews. It gathered around 10-11 crore on opening day. According to the Hindustan Times review of the film, “Mona Singh as Laal’s mother is endearing and looks authentic in a role of a Sikh woman, who doesn’t look strange with her Punjabi diction.”
