Liger is supported by Karan Johar, and stars too Ananya PandayRamya Krishnan and Ronit Roy. It was promoted extensively as a pan-Indian film. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, the Telugu and Tamil versions of Liger released on August 25. The Hindi version will hit theaters on Friday.

The film got a wide release when it opened for shows as early as 4 a.m. in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Despite counting on great pre-release hype, Liger did not receive favorable reviews from fans. One Twitter user wrote: “In Liger, Vijay Deverakonda‘s transformation is astonishing and he gives a dedicated performance. But it’s a missed opportunity. The narration is completely formal. Where is the story?”

Meanwhile, a Twitter user praised Vijay and Ramya’s sincere efforts but asked why their potential was wasted in a “bad” movie. In a series of tweets about Liger, the user wrote: “Frankly, the golden days of Puri Jagannadh are over. It’s okay if his movies are bad. But why take a star like Vijay Deverakonda and an actor like Ramya Krishna down with you? They’re both so serious in their performances, it breaks your heart to see them in a movie who don’t care. It’s so wrong.”

Another user wrote that he was ‘disappointed’ by Liger. He said the film failed to capture the pan-Indian picture. “The idea of pan-Indian cinema is a bubble. Get back to basics, get a solid story,” the user wrote.

Vijay spoke about Liger in a recent interview, where he said he was not afraid of the fate of the film. Vijay added that he had the blessings of his mother, the love of the people and God’s support. News agency ANI quoted Vijay as saying: “With Liger, we expected a little drama … but we will fight. We put our hearts into making this film. And I believe I am right. No room for fear, when I had nothing, I was not afraid, and now that I have achieved something, I think even now there need be no more fear Maa ka aashirwaad hai, Logon ka pyaar hai, bhagwaan ka hath hai, andar aag hai, Kaun rookge dekh lenge (We have mother’s blessing, love of people, God’s support, a fire in us, we’ll see who will stop us)!”
