Laal Singh Chaddha missed the mark at the box office. The Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoorstarrer released on August 11 and did not take full advantage of the extended Raksha Bandhan weekend. Laal Singh Chaddha, the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ 1994 film Forrest Gump, earned between 45-46 crore in five days. Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan, who collided with the Aamir film at the box office, has also not fared well and has reportedly been around 33.5 crore in five days. Laal Singh Chaddha had high hopes for performing well at the box office. However, the things the film has done so far have not been satisfactory. Trading sources told HT that: Laal Singh Chaddha earned somewhere in the range of Monday 7.5-8.5 crore in the domestic circuit. This brought the film’s five-day extended weekend earnings to about 45-46 million.
According to HT sources, the Raksha Bandhan holiday factor could be over by now and the film is expected to see a sharp drop on Tuesday, day 6 of its release. As things stand, the business is likely to close next weekend. Judging by the latest cash register figures, it seems likely that Laal Singh Chaddha will not be able to cross the border 100 crore mark at the box office which would be a huge disappointment for Aamir Khan because this is his first movie in four years.
Laal Singh Chaddha’s overseas performance was comparatively better, but not close to what was expected. According to a report in Box Office India, Laal Singh Chaddha earned just over $4 million (approximately 31 crore) during the extended weekend. The film’s three-day weekend was third best after the Covid-19 pandemic after KGF 2 and 83; while the four day weekend made it the best after the pandemic. However, the figure comes after comparing four days with three days worth of other films.
Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan and written by actor-writer Atul Kulkarni. Besides Aamir and Kareena there are also Mona Singh and marks Naga Chaitanya‘s Bollywood debut. Before its release, the film made headlines after the hashtag Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha started trending on Twitter. Aamir, Kareena, Advait, as well as many other celebrities reacted to the boycott trend against Laal Singh Chaddha, which could be one of the factors in the film’s bland box office performance.
