Aamir Khanstarrer Laal Singh Chaddha hasn’t quite managed to get the cash registers ringing. On the fourth day of release – Sunday – it earned about 10 crore at the Indian box office, up just 15% from Saturday’s earnings. This marginal improvement wasn’t enough to make up for the slow start of the film and the sharp drop on day two, meaning the film is likely to have rather disappointing longevity figures. According to sources, Laal Singh Chaddha has earned somewhere in the range of 9.5-10.5 crore in the domestic circuit on Sunday. This brings the four-day weekend profit to approximately 37-38 million. On its own, the number may look significant, but given the wide release the film had and Aamir’s star power, it’s pretty below expectations. Add to that the fact that Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2- – a much smaller film – did better in its opening weekend, and the numbers start to look bleak for the film.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, who had Kartik AaryanTabu and Kiara Advani in the lead role, released on May 20 and earned 55 crore in its opening weekend, a number that seems really out of reach for Laal Singh Chaddha at the moment. Film trade analyst tweeted how Laal Singh Chaddha and Aksay Kumara‘s Raksha Bandhan – which was also released on August 11 – is unlikely to exceed Bhool Bhulaiyaa’s three-day weekend earnings, despite getting a truly extended five-day weekend. “According to current trends, #LaalSinghChaddha and #RakshaBandhan will not be able to top the opening weekend of #BhoolBhulaiyaa2 [ 55.96 cr; non-holiday; 3-day weekend]despite enjoying a 5-day extended wknd, with 3 major holidays,” Taran wrote in his tweet Monday morning.

Laal Singh Chaddha has a chance to further increase her earnings as Monday is Independence Day and Janmashtami, another important holiday, falls on August 18, ie Thursday. Given the number of holidays in the week, the film should earn its biggest bite on day eight, but the sharp drop after day one and the nominal increase since then has meant it’s unlikely the pace will pick up now. Industry insiders say that according to current trends, Laal Singh Chaddha is likely to remain below the 100 crore mark domestically by the end of his run which would be a huge disappointment for Aamir.

Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan of Secret Superstar fame and written by actor-writer Atul Kulkarni. It also stars Kareena Kapoor as Laal’s childhood sweetheart Rupa, Mona Singh as his mother and marks Naga Chaitanya’s Bollywood debut. The film is the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ 1994 film Forrest Gump.
