The government of India has announced a day of mourning to honor the former prime minister. “As a sign of our deepest respect for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, a day of national mourning will be celebrated on July 9, 2022,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

“Shinzo Abe was in a state of cardiac arrest when he was taken to the hospital,” Hidetada Fukushima, a professor of emergency medicine, Nara Medical University Hospital, said at a news conference. He also confirmed that Shinzo’s death was “due to blood loss.” Meanwhile, police arrested 41-year-old Yamagami Tetsuya, a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, who shot the former prime minister.
