Filmmaker James Cameron has said his upcoming film Avatar The Way of Water is intended as a light “rebuke” to current superhero movies. The filmmaker said that Na’vi – the alien race of warriors in his film – were more real than many of the superheroes seen on screen today, as they have children and responsibilities. His comments have sparked strong backlash from fans of superhero movies. Read also: James Cameron criticizes the character development of Marvel and DC movies
from Cameron avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film of all time and was only briefly challenged by a superhero movie: Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. In fact, for the past few years, it’s largely been superhero movies from Marvel or DC stables that have been the big summer blockbusters. But James Cameron is not a fan, as he thinks the superheroes in these movies don’t “handle real things.”
In a new interview with GQ, the filmmaker said, “I consciously thought to myself, all these superheroes, they never have kids. They never really deal with the real things that hold you back and give you feet of clay in the real world.
In a separate part of the same interview, he emphasized the same saying that people with kids can act “crazier.” He added: “What do two characters who are warriors, who take risks and have no fear, when they have kids and are still fighting the epic battle? Their instinct is to be fearless and do crazy things. Jump off cliffs, dive bomb in the middle of an enemy armada, but you have kids. What does that look like in a family setting?”
However, fans of the superhero genre were not too happy with the director’s comments, especially since they pointed out several superheroes who not only have children, but also revolve around them. Referring to the recent Marvel movie universe movies, one fan tweeted, “Phase 4 of the MCU has literally made a very unsubtle point about setting up the next generation and giving its Heroes offspring to pass the torch to. LOL!”
Some fans pointed out that heroes like Iron Man, Ant Man, and Hawkeye all have kids, just like Black Adam. ‘Why the disrespect for Hawkeye, Mr. C? And did Reed and Sue not have a child? And didn’t Peter live with his aunt? Ma and Pa Kent were just accessories,” one fan tweeted. Many others pointed out that the premise of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was all about Wanda’s desire to be with her children.
Avatar The way of the water will be released worldwide on December 16. Touted as one of the most expensive ever made, the film is also one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent times.
