The video opens with director Karan Malhotra saying, “When I work with Sanjay Dutt, especially if it’s a negative character, all my madness comes out. Automatically I get ideas of how to present him in the most menacing and nerve-wracking way.” .”
The filmmaker added that Sanjay’s character was written as a megalomaniac and the best way to portray the characteristic was to name it as Shuddh Singh. Shuddh is the Hindi word for pure.
The video also shows Sanjay talking about the film. He said he gives in the director’s vision, while also adding in with his input.
In an earlier promotional video, Ranbir confessed his love for negative characters. “We always side with the hero. But if there was no villain for the hero to show his heroism, how could a hero be a hero? I have a dream that one day I will play a negative role and people will say to their children ‘so jaa, so jaa nahi toh Ranbir aa jayega’. As our cinema evolves, so does the villainous character become more complex and interesting. I look forward to the bad guys we have yet to see, the actors who will scare us and the villains who will redefine evil,” he said.
Shamshera, at the head of Karan Malhotra, is set in the fictional city of Kaza, where a warrior tribe is captured, enslaved and tortured by a ruthless authoritarian General Shuddh Singh.
