Hema first appeared in a lead role, opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar and rose to fame. She is best known for films such as Dream Girl, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Naseeb, Satte Pe Satta and Baghban. She was last seen in Rajkummar Rao and Rakul Preet Singhstar Shimla Mirchi. She is also a Member of Parliament and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her constituency is Mathura.

Emphasizing the problem of potholes in Mumbai during monsoons, Hema told ETimes: “I just cannot imagine how a pregnant woman must travel on these potholed roads. My concern is that of a Mumbaikar and it is the duty of the police to direct traffic and guide those traveling by road. Today I experienced it firsthand.”

“I’m really afraid to go out because there is so much traffic and chaos. In places like Delhi and even Mathura, although there is still a lot of traffic, things are streamlined now,” she added. Hema, who has traveled to places in Mumbai and the suburbs such as Juhu, China Creek and Dahisar, also said: “We have traveled so much on these roads for shooting, but now it is very difficult. Today’s experience makes me say, Mumbai kya tha kya ho gaya hai (What has Mumbai become).”

Earlier, Hema made news when the former water supply and sanitation minister of Maharashtra Gulabrao Patil compared the smooth roads in his constituency to the actor’s cheeks. In response, she said such comments were not to the liking. Gulabrao later apologized, telling the media, “I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.”
