Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwanic‘s Excel Entertainment has gotten itself into trouble. On Monday, the Film Studios Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union (FSSAMU) publicly accused Excel Entertainment of failing to pay dues to 300 day laborers serving on the production design team of “Mirzapur 3‘. The union claimed that the production house has an outstanding dues of Rs 20-25 lakh because it has not paid the daily bets as of May 2022, despite the workers continuing to work on the web series’ sets.
FSSAMU has issued a letter to the media accusing Excel Entertainment of non-payment
According to reports in Mid-Day, the workers continued to use their services as the web series was shot at various studios in Mumbai and Benares. FSSAMU has reportedly written a letter to the media stating that the workers must work for extended hours beyond the limits allowed under the provision in the labor law. It also claimed they were not getting quality food or adequate seating on the set. The general secretary of FSSAMU claimed that they had written 3 letters to Excel Entertainment so far. He added that more than 300 day laborers have been working on the Mirzapur 3 sets since May and it has been more than 3 months since they were paid. There was no response from the production house, but after the letter was released to the media, the production house contacted them and promised to pay the dues within 48 hours.
Statement by Excel Entertainment
Later, Excel Entertainment issued a statement, which read: “This is the first time we have been notified of such a complaint from the union. We would like to continue [state] that the FSSAMU has not contacted Excel via letters, emails or phone calls. Excel currently has seven to eight projects in production, and none of these projects have non-payment issues. In the last 22 years of being in the business, we have never encountered any complaints about non-payment. Excel has a strict payment compliance policy where we make payments directly to day laborers and not to a union. We will investigate this matter from our side. We would like to mention that Excel enjoys an excellent reputation in the industry for treating all employees with equal respect and dignity.”
