Dakota Johnson gears up for the release of the film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion on Netflix. In a new interview, the actor shared her experience making Fifty Shades of Grey, which brought her into the limelight. Dakota called filming the Fifty Shades trilogy “psychotic” and said it wasn’t everything she initially thought it would be. The actor said that the author of the books on which the films were based, Erika Leonard, who goes by the pseudonym EL James, had a lot of creative control over the filming, often demanding that things be done a certain way, even if others felt it was necessary. the movies didn’t help. Dakota also said she “signed up to make a completely different version of the movies” than what they ended up making.
Dakota told Vanity Fair that making the Fifty Shades movies “went into something crazy.” “There were many different disagreements. I’ve never been able to speak truthfully about this because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I’m proud of what we ended up making and everything is as it should be, but it was tricky,” Dakota said.
Dakota was originally cast as Anastasia Steele alongside actor Charlie Hunnam, who would play Christian Gray until he dropped out of the film due to “schedule conflicts.” The actor said in her latest interview that EL James was so upset about this that she scrapped the entire script before casting actor Jamie Dornan to play the part. While Dakota admitted that working on Fifty Shades was “great for our careers,” she said the experience was “so, so weird.”
“We would shoot the movie that Erika (EL James) wanted to make, and then we’d shoot the movie that we wanted to make. The night before I would rewrite scenes with the old dialogue so I could add a line here and there. It was chaos all the time… If I had known at the time that it would be like this, nobody would have done it… It would have been like, ‘Oh, this is psychotic. “But no, I don’t regret it,” Dakota said.
In a 2019 interview, EL James told the website Arizona Republic that she had a “wretched time” making the first Fifty Shades of Gray film.
In her upcoming film Persuasion, Dakota will star alongside actors Cosmo Jarvis and Henry Goldin. The movie stars are streaming on Netflix in July.
