After a disastrous June and July at the box office, there was finally some good news for the Telugu film industry yesterday as bimbisara opened to strong numbers. The Nandamuri Kalyan Ram starrer fantasy action movie collected Rs. 9.50 crores approximately on Friday in India earning Rs. 6.25 crores share. Telugu states made most of the profits with Rs. 8.80 crores opening day gross. Opening day numbers are the best for Kalyan Ram’s career, doubling his previous best opener ISM (2016), which cost Rs. 4.20 crores (Rs. 3 crores share) in Telugu states.
The beginning of the film is good, but the most important thing is that the reception of the first audience is quite good. For the past two months, the situation has been pretty dire for the industry, with movies like Thank youRama Rao on Duty, Ante Sundaraniki, Pakka Commercial, etc. who did not start at the box office and even when the start was there for the warrior the reception was not on its side. Bimbisara has succeeded on both fronts and should become a HIT for the industry.
The film’s worldwide theatrical rights fetched Rs. About 15 crores and that should be fixed quite easily, probably over the weekend itself. The film is also off to a good start abroad and is expected to earn $225,000 in the US this weekend.
The territorial breakdown of the opening day for Bimbisara is as follows:
Nizam – Rs. 3.30 crores (share of Rs. 1.90 crores)
Relinquished – Rs. 1.65 crores (share of Rs. 1.25 crores)
Andra – Rs. 3.85 crores (share of Rs. 2.75 crores)
AP/TS – Rs. 8.80 crores (share of Rs. 5.90 crores)
Karnataka – Rs. 50 lakhs (share of Rs. 25 lakhs)
Tamil Nadu/Kerala – Rs. 10 lakhs (share of Rs. 5 lakhs)
Rest of India – Rs. 10 lakhs (share of Rs. 5 lakhs)
India – Rs. 9.50 crores (share of Rs. 6.25 crores)
The other Telugu release this week, Mollywood superstar Dulquer starrer Sita Ramam, had an average start, grossing Rs. 2.75 crores in Telugu states and Rs. About 4 crores in total in India. More on this after the weekend.
