Avatar The Way of Water, the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Avatar, is all set for its big theatrical release. Avatar 2, one of the most highly anticipated movies of recent times, is expected to break box office records. The makers have already announced that three more films in the franchise are planned. However, director James Cameron recently said that the future of the franchise will depend on how Part 2 fares at the box office. Released in 2009, Avatar emerged as the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide. The sequels were announced by director James Cameron in 2011. He said in 2017 that writing for four sequels had been completed and that shooting for The Way of Water started later that year.

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, the director said, “The market might be telling us we’ll be done in three months, or we’ll be half done, which means, ‘Okay, let’s finish the story in movie three, and don’t go on forever,” if it’s just not profitable… We’re in a different world now than when I wrote this stuff, even. It’s the one-two punch – the pandemic and streaming. Or, vice versa, maybe we’ll be people reminding what going to the theater is all about. This movie definitely does that. The question is: how many people give as***?”

Earlier, the film’s producer, John Landau, had revealed that parts of Avatar 3 and 4 had already been shot. “We completed most of the first act of Avatar 4 and there were logistical reasons why we had to do it. We designed most of the entire movie for Avatar 4, but we didn’t film everything – just the first act,” he told Variety.

Avatar The way of the water brings back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver from the first film, while adding Kate Winslet to the mix. The film will be released worldwide on December 16, 2022.
