In his blog, Amitabh recalled that citizens were not allowed to hoist the Indian national flag, except on certain days, until MP Naveen Jindal moved the court and was given the right to raise the flag. “He won the decision in his favor and immediately I started hoisting our national flags on our houses, as many who came to the gates on Sunday for the meetings at Jalsa would have noticed. There were of course several restrictions – when to raise it, when to lower it, size, material and it was to be made from ‘khadi’ and bought from a particular shop in Bangalore until 2014 – now renamed Bengaluru. Now there’s a campaign to make it fly out of every home with pride,” the actor wrote.

Amitabh also recalled the time India gained independence in 1947: “Those memories in the spirit of independence on August 15, 1947 and a five-year-old me holding the flag in our humble home in Allahabad in the porch, filled with pride of patriotism, of identity, of mine and ours, of belonging.”

He added: “And every occasion since then, the emotion that comes with it every time it’s played … one of the most, which is the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata and the Indo-Pak cricket match, is asked to watch it live to sing before the start of the game..and 100,000 thousand who filled the arena, sing along with pride to be an Indian!!Jai Hind!!and that ecstatic night when India won the World Cup Cricket.. Abhishek and I atop our car waving the Tricolor screaming through the streets along with the hundreds crowding the roads.”

Returning to the present, Amitabh wrote that he sang a few lines for a recording: “They asked me this afternoon to sing a few lines of the song currently being pictured .. I have .. some association with National fervor a pride.!!”

He also tweeted a photo with the tricolor, writing: “Har ghar tiranga, ghar ghar tiranga (the national flag in every home).” Har Ghar Tiranga is a Ministry of Culture program to mark the 75th anniversary of Indian independence.
